First, many of the so called submission engines will submit your site
to other sites which use submissions as a way of getting names to spam
with their advertising. When I submitted a special page to a 500 site
submission service, I got a few hits to that page, mostly from robots, and
must have been 200 or 300 pieces of spammage! A month later, that page
was getting ZERO hits. So my advice is hit the search engines yourself,
and plug the pages yourself.
Third, meta tags and titles are nearly mandatory. They are not enough
to get you good position... but almost enough. If you want to be listed
for, say, "boats", you need a good title, like
"Sunnyside Boats and Boat Equipment"
(Note that the word boat is more common than boating in queries, so
you should use boat rather than boating.)
Then you need a good billboard for your site -- the meta description tag.
one to two lines of text. Your meta description tag is your store front on
the information superhighway. You web pages are showrooms, not
store fronts. They don't see your pages till after they have decided to
enter your site... It is your meta description tag that has to persuade
them to visit you. Example:
meta name="description" content="We make, sell, and finance boats 5 to 50
feet long. Real wood, real brass, real class! Training classes too! New
and used."
(Note, I did not say "pre-owned", because no one searches for pre-owned
boats, they search for used boats. And maybe forclosure boats or
reposessed boats, but that does not look good on the description.
Nex, you need a good set of keywords on boating:
meta name="keywords" content="boat, boats, boating, dock, drydock,
trailer, fish, fishing, sail, sailboat, sailboats, new, used, sale,
finance, credit, loan, bass, houseboat, houseboats, powerboats, skiboats,
forclosure, reposessed...
Having that, you need to work the main keywords into the titles and text
of the pages.
H1 Great New and Used Boats for Sale /H1
H2 Powerboats for sale /H2
We have new and used powerboats....
h2 Good bass fishing boats
We carry the latest line of bass boats...
And well into the pages, so that people have some text to read while
they are waiting, you can add some pictures of boats.
Having done it that way, the search engines will see that your meta
tags are not empty words, but are worth far more because they are repeated
in the text and titles. This will cause some engines to put you much
higher than pages which just mention the words in the text, or just in the
meta tags.
And once a person hits your page, he or she will see right off the
bat that you DO have what they are looking for.
