Excellent post, Javilk, hence my repeating the entire post below.
I'd like to add, though, a trick I use to handle the spamming
concern. Since my personal domain has unlimited "email aliases",
I use a special email address when submitting a site and set up
filters to send all email addressed to that particular address
into its own bit bucket. That way, I never see the spams unless
I choose to.
I use what I consider one of the best submission programs
available called AddWeb ( http://www.cyberspacehq.com/addweb/home.htm )
which is currently at version 2.54. Version 3.0 is in beta and,
when released, will submit to over 1500 different engines --
submitting to multiple sites simultaneously. It's ranking
engine will rank a site with the top 14 search engines and the
reporting is excellent. Though my company name is similar to
theirs, I have no association with them except as a very
happy customer, and now, a beta tester of version 3.0.
