Hrmm...if you have good source control software, you don't need a change
management process actually.
In Perforce (the software that I recommended) you
1. check out a file
2. if someone else has worked on it and you dont have a fresh copy, you get
something saying it needs to be synched.
3. if someone is currently working on it, you will get a message saying so
so you know in advance that one of you will have to resolve the diffs.
4. when you check a file back in it is locked in place.
5. if someone else edited it at the same time as you but checked theirs in
sooner, you will have to resolve the diffs by either doing a merge or
discarding someones changes.
6. at any point in time you can go back and see color coded diffs for any
particular change number
7. at any point in time you can get an entire history of any given document
Perforce gives each developer their own work space. There is also a central
depot but no one touches files directly there. Each developer can change
anything in their work space. When a file is checked in, it goes back to
the depot.
We are software developers of a web based product. Depending on people to
cooperate with each other wouldn't work for us. We need software that is
bullet proof. Perforce is that software. :)
I'm surprised source safe wouldnt work similarly to Perforce and would
still require all that cooperation between people and non-automated safety
precautions...
