Forgot to add that we always look to get an initial deposit (typically 1/3
of the total on fixed-price web site projects and 1/2 of the low end of our
estimate on hourly engineering projects). Our feeling is that if we can get
at least one check out of them, it's much more likely that we can get other
checks out of them. Sometimes we're willing to start work after we've heard
that the check is in the mail or is in progress with accounting, but we
generally prefer to have the check physically in hand before starting work
on a new project. For good, long-term clients we do tend to start relaxing
our requirements after a while.
