Agreed, it's not really relevant quibbling over architectural
metaphors in this case, though it's a little ironic that anyone
should apply the term "Bauhaus" to a style of design that emphasizes
form at the expense of function; for this is the polar opposite of
what Gropius and his disciples espoused at the Bauhaus school.
There were numerous components to the Bauhaus ideology, and to the
Internationalist school that evolved from it, but primary was the
rejection of old "bourgeois" notions of decoration and opulence: a
building, or piece of furniture, was considered attractive if its
function was explicit in its design, rather than hidden behind
"irrelevant" flourishes and colours. Thus the predominance today of
stark high-rise towers with their strucutural steel obvious, their
hard right angles and their absence of decoration.
So a style of Website design that insists on hiding the functionality
of text links, and obscuring other links behind imagemaps and the
like, is anything but Bauhaus-like.
