Problem solved: Added this line to the imapd.conf file:
sasl_saslauthd_path: /var/run/saslauthd/mux That's it. Sounds like saslauthd and Cyrus IMAP are looking for the saslauthd socket at different places or the permissions on the path to the socket are preventing Cyrus IMAP from connecting.
