In order of speed (fastest to slowest):

JNI CoreImage/ImageIO
JNI ImageMagick
system call ImageMagick
Java2D

Java2D is easiest, but it's DOG slow. If you don't have any performance requirements (or if you aren't dealing with large images), it's the path of least resistance.
