Just to avoid confusion and the NullPointerException, I would suggest this:

{
   if (this.dueDateType() == null) {
        return "";
   }
   else if (this.dueDateType().equals("N")) {
        return "";
   }
   return this.dueDateType();
}

or this:

{
   if (this.dueDateType() != null) {
      if (!this.dueDateType().equals("N")) {
         return this.dueDateType();
      }
   }
   return "";
}
