I can confirm that D2W use is increasing dramatically. It is finally becoming
a mainstream WO technology after many years of languishing in a backwater
mostly penetrated only my Anjo and a few others.

Nor should. Having fully open source extensions outside of Apple is a Very
Good Thing, IMO.

It exists. I saw it at WOWODC and it was a very nice implementation, quite
impressive. However, it is the internal tool of a company whose business is
not making dev tools so I have no idea if it will ever see the light of day.
