To provide a little more detail: the current search engine is embedded inside the application that runs the portal, so whenever a page is edited it is reindexed. In addition, the entire site is reindexed nightly, so that changes to other parts of the portal such as Jive can be indexed. This means that it is very difficult to do anything major with the current site search, as it is embedded inside the application itself. We are planning to move away from the current portal software, and at that point we would also look to provide a new search mechanism, most probably as a stand-alone function so we can add other stuff into the index, such as genunix and the various distro sites. We might consider using google if we can get it to index multiple domains & present the results as a single result set, or we may consider using one of the open source search engine packages that's available. For example, I've already looked at Apache Solr, and I've been watching the Minion (http://blogs.sun.com/searchguy/entry/minion_an_open_source_search1) information that's been coming out over the last few days. -- Alan Burlison -- _______________________________________________ website-discuss mailing list [email protected]
