Mostly I just want to make sure everything is up. We have lots of little applications on a variety of servers and platforms, and most of them aren't being actively developed, so we forget they are even there.

Why not use nagios? I've set it up at home to monitor my server across the net and it hardly ever says a peep. Nagios provides an architecture to monitor one or many machines flexibly, and it also allows for easy addition of external tests.

You can do things like write python (or anything else) scripts that implement your custom tests, have them run on the specific server you want tested, then report back to the main nagios server. Nagios handles running the test and reporting back to the server. All you need to do is provide the test, or use a more generic bundled test.

The live demo on nagios.org wasn't working when I checked, but the screenshots page can give you a feel for the interface and statistics etc.
