Maybe I’m crazy, but I just use cron, shut down weewx every night, and do a 
gzip of the db to a fileshare then start weewx back up. Super lazy, but when 
like 15y of data is only 80mb or something gzipped, not a huge deal. I think I 
keep 30 days worth of backups.
