I previously ran a .deb install but changed to setup.py some time ago, I find the convenience of having everything in the one place outweighs the simplicity of an apt-get install. I run up a VM reasonably regularly when I am working on something and have a couple of bash scripts to run to install and configure a vanilla weeWX and its done quite quickly. Re the cards, yes Sandisk are good, I have never had an issue with one but I have always moved everything except boot off to a USB HDD. WeeWX will also publish your missing WU data. You do miss some of the highs and lows that may have been picked up in the loop data but otherwise its an effective strategy.
