Any updates with this im now running 100% stable with PI 2 and 4.4.x
kernel would like to upgrade to a PI 3 but as it is not running on old
kernel it is not working.

I have been using weewx on 4.9 series kernels on intel 64-bit systems
for a long time with no such problems so it would seem to relate to
the specific hardware, but I have zero experience with Raspberry Pis.
The only thing I can suggest to try initially is my experimental
driver with libusb1. The details are posted in this other wmr300
