For those following on from me.....the two power packs - 1 feeding the Rpi 3 and the other feeding the USB hub has made a tremendous difference.....no problems shown in the log, no time problems, no voltage problems....it just flows and operates really well. I wish I had known this from the start it would have saved me so much grief!
