you asked for the HP2553 station with the HP2551 console.
For the GW1000/GW1100/GW2000 displayless consoles/gateways and the
WN19x0 console , weewx can directly communicate via their API using the
Ecowitt Gateway driver (new name) or GW1000 API driver (old name).
The HP2551/HP350x, WS2320E/ WS2910 consoles don't have this API, hence
the use of the interceptor driver.
