That happened on my Vantage console when the memory got corrupted after a near strike that also killed other things, like the Ethernet port on the PC that was connected to the console and a switch on the other end of the Ethernet cable. I vaguely remember it took a lot of attempts to erase the memory but it's worked ever since. Have you tried doing a factory reset on the console? Failing that I'm pretty sure others have mentioned that 2nd hand consoles can be bought from ebay or other online market places.
