Gender-neutral nicknames for gender-specific names are sort of OK,
but not great--Chris for Christine and Christopher, Pat for Patricia
and Patrick, Terry for... Terrence and Teresa?  Isn't the actress
from ER Michael Michele?  Sometimes I think girls get boys' names
because the parents were expecting a boy and had picked out a boy's
name and couldn't think of something else fast enough, and they
wanted to honor the child's grandfather or something..

girls names now, Terry, Chris, Pat, etc can still go both ways, as it
were.  I worked with a girl named Michael once.  Not Michaela, or
Michele... but Michael.  Why give your kid a name that so
predominately and obviously belongs to the other gender?  Somehow I
have in my head that I knew someone once who named her daughter Gary.
