Speaking of shoppers' shame...When I was in college, the only place to buy condoms near campus was Walgreens, but they were locked behind a glass case.  (I'm assuming because of the epidemic shoplifting by teenagers too ashamed to actually go up and buy them.)

The best part was having to ask the 70-year old cashier with the "Jesus is My Co-Pilot" pin to let you into the Cabinet of Sin.  There's really no point in buying anything else 'to cover' after that.

Also, I'm still uncertain about the underwear shame part...is it the worry that the cashier will immediately begin picturing you in them?

I don't usually pay attention to what people are buying, but I
couldn't help noticing this guy a few years ago...it was about this
time of year, he was probably 17 or 18, dressed in a tux, buying a
corsage and a box of Trojans at Giant, with absolutely no shame. I
got such a kick out of that--I wondered if it was wishful thinking on
his part, or if it was sure thing. At least he'd be practicing safe
sex!
