I think Daria pretty much hit it on the head when she talked about deaf culture. Lip-reading and Signed English are considered by militant deaf ways of trying to placate the hearing culture at the expense of deaf culture, like black people sitting in the back of the bus or using separate fountains or stepping aside for whites on the sidewalk. As far as I can tell, most Gaulladet students, like students everywhere, are mostly militantly liberal, and mostly object to Fernandes' mainstreaming (lipreading and Signed English). I haven't heard of King having a problem with Fernandes, he's seemed to try to negotiate in her favor, from what I've heard. But I haven't been following it that closely.

Why are they protesting the incoming president?  Is it because she
isn't deaf?  It isn't clear from the article, but I think I missed
something.  I will read the previous articles to see if I can figure it
