This will be mostly boring, so skip ahead to **** for a completely unrelated funny story at the end if you're not interested.
A big part of what I do professionally is study student protest movements and teach young people how to organize to affect change in their communities. So... Galludet's 80s protest, which resulted in I. King Jordan becoming president is usually held up as a model for young people. Basically, the school's board appointed a hearing teacher, and the students on campus protested for weeks until a deaf president was named in his stead. This recent protest is a little sketchier, but still has a lot of power. Students did protest when the provost was made president in the spring, and have revived their protest this fall. The main issue they have, as I understand it, is that she's more of a lip reader than an ASLer, and that would change the mission/character of Galludet. Additionally, they are protesting the board completely disregarding the views of the university's faculty and students, the majority of which do not support Fernandez's appointment. I am impressed and proud of the young people at Galludet for standing up for what they believe in. Historically, it has always been the "job" for young people to rebel against authority to affect change, and this is just an example of that. Young people today are too complacent and apathetic, and therefore protests like these seem extreme and shocking. This is nothing compared to the 60s. ****My grandma had a mastectomy yesterday, and when she was meeting with her reconstruction surgeon and discussing the tatooing of the nipple, she asked him to make it in a flower shape, or something else pretty. How psyched is grandpa for his wife's new tit and tat? --- In [email protected], "Ray Bradley" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Why are they protesting? > > Because it's exam time! > > Colleges *always* have the most protests during Midterms and Finals. > > Notice how there wasn't a very big protest in September, but at the > end of last spring and the past week? > > Students would rather protest than study. > > - Ray > > --- In [email protected], "Ellen" > <ellengoodman6@> wrote: > > > > Can someone please fill me in on the Gallaudet situation?
