Follow-up Comment #4, bug #9267 (project wesnoth):

Some might consider it a feature not a bug... I can think of a few situations
where it might be desirable (as a campaign designer) to set team to one value,
while having the user-visible team remain the same.

I think the usefulness outweighs the potential for mischief. For example, the
Team Survival map might could use this type of setup. The WML modder just
needs a mechanism to change user-visible team dynamically as well (not sure
if there is already a mechanism for that or not).
