Follow-up Comment #1, bug #9787 (project wesnoth):
I continued to play from where I left off when I posted this bug report, just
to see what happened next. It was interesting.
I finished "Strategy of Hope" without incident. The next scenario, "Unlawful
Orders" commenced, still with no Harper but with a random Thug instead.
However, the first time that night fell, and the enemy units turned into
dark, and undead creatures, some of those creatures were assigned to my
side! I ended up with a few Bone Knights, a Bone Shooter, and a Necromancer
that way (that I remember).
More interestingly, when dawn came, most of the units that had gotten
randomly assigned to me this way STAYED as Bone Knights, etc. and stayed
under my control, except one of the units (I think it was a mage that turned
into a necromancer after dark) turned into a Level 3 Mage of Light--and
stayed under my control! Unsurprisingly, I finished the scenario way
early--and all of these units -- including the Mage of Light--have
subsequently appeared in my Recall list. I attach the replay for Unlawful
Orders and the save of the turn in which the units switch for your
reference.
I'm presently having fun playing with these units I've never gotten to play
with in a normal campaign, but I suspect the situation badly needs fixing for
game balance's sake. :-)
