Technical explanation: "The unit at x1,y1 is auto-stored once per event (when
first accessed via $-notation or when first utilized for variable
storage/modification)."
Simple explanation: "inside an event, this is the unit at $x1,$y1 "
The documentation was deliberately simplified because it is aimed at
beginners.
Whether or not you think it is "technically correct" I don't see any point of
splitting hairs about this anymore. If you don't like it feel free to change
it.
