This may be a problem with SDL.
I've reverted the version of SDL used to 1.2.13 for ppc since the problem
doesn't appear there based on the original submission. This is not an option
for Intel as Lion crashes with older versions of SDL.
This http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=35892 suggests that the
problem appears in some contexts in other OS versions.
