Details:
If a [side] is configured with controller=null then it is not shown in the
status table. While this makes sense for sides that are not yet present on the
board, there is another setting to handle that (hidden=). Plus, it does not
particularly suit a present-yet-dormant side, particularly if fog or shroud is
enabled (possibly making the status table the only way for the player to be
aware that the side exists).
For what it's worth, using :inspect shows that the side's hidden= setting is
still no; you just get the same result (not shown in the status window). Using
[modify_side] to change the controller to "ai" causes the side to be shown in
the status window.
