Follow-up Comment #23:

I have now made progress. Everything that I specified in my previous post
works.

Movement animations are a bit jerky some of the time.  I'm not sure how big a
problem this is, but it's due to the amount of calculations that are being
performed during the movement animation - in particular, redrawing hexes where
shroud or fog were cleared frequently takes more than a single frame.

I've attached the patch here so that it can get a bit of review before I
commit it to trunk.  If no one takes notice of it, though, I'll probably
commit it to trunk sometime tomorrow anyway.  On that note, I'm assigning this
to myself, since there's no longer any reason I can't commit it myself when I
think it needs doing.
