Follow-up Comment #1:
It's most likely just a general issue with Freetype and synthetic italics
that's not specific to Wesnoth. We probably should forget about space
consideration and just ship italic variants of the fonts we need (or at least
DejaVu Sans since it's the Western script font) instead of relying on
quick-and-dirty runtime glyph transforms.
