My feeling is that the backstabber doesn't need explicit cooperation from the unit on the other side. If it is threatening the defending unit, that should be enough to aid the backstabbing unit. I don't know that either position is strong enough to override what would be better for the game though. I think having more interaction between players would make the game more interesting and hence expanding this to the enemy of my enemy is my friend (at least while his back isn't turned) will make the game more fun in the few cases where it will matter. Other people may have different opinions of this.
