So why not simply take this as an indication that this change is a bad one? The current formula was found after long tries and gives a reasonable result which matches the expectations even if users don't understand exactly how it's computed. You simply can't add more flexibility without violating KISS in attack damage calculations since it's very complex already. You say it's hard to understand right now - so please bring up an example of where the resulting damage after modifiers is unexpected which is in use right now.
