That isn't the only area where that is true. The language standard issue
never reached a real consensus. People gave arguments on both sides and
I don't think were that far apart, but no decision was really made, though
SotBE stayed as Eric wrote, as no one felt strongly enough about the issue
to change it against the current maintainer's wishes.

I think making a committee with authority is a good step, as Dave doesn't
seem to have time to be benevolent dictator, which seemed to be the way things
were earlier on in the project.
