Hi everyone,

We have a feature that allows people to opt-in to have statistical
information about their Wesnoth games sent to a server, and presents
aggregate data to us for analysis.

This feature is currently enabled on an opt-in basis. That is, to
activate it, players have to click on the envelope at the bottom-right
of the title screen and check a box to send feedback.

This makes the feature much less useful because although I would imagine
most or all users would have no problems sending this data to the
servers, many users do not know about the feature, and so never click
the box.

So, I propose we change this feature to be used on an opt-out basis.
That is, it will be turned on by default, and only be disabled if the
user goes and un-checks the box.

The only concern with this would be that of privacy concerns, but I
don't think that such concerns are well-founded. Specifically, I don't
see how collecting user's game statistics and making them available in
aggregate form could possibly invade a user's privacy, and I can't
conceive of any reason why any user would be unwilling to participate.
Just in case some users would be unhappy about this, we would include
the opt-out feature to disable sending stats, of course.

Any thoughts on this? Does anyone have any objections to us changing
this from opt-in to opt-out?

David
