That's not a very polite thing to do. I think a better option would be some sort of notice when playing the game for the first time (probably detecting that a preference hasn't been set yet) that explains what data is being collected and how the collected data will benefit the Wesnoth project. And then let people make their own choice. Note that although the major concern is privacy, those of us that use dial up networking with a cap on connection hours may not want to have playing Wesnoth initiate a network connection every time we play.
