As a follow up for the crash:

Since the database for the forum was seriously broken (short extract from the
irc logs: http://wesnoth.debian.net/%23wesnoth-dev-2008-08-08.log

08:39 <cycholka> eh, going back in time in the end, I'm not able to save forums
db in a satisfying way
08:45 <Sirp_> cycholka, we don't have to go back more than a few months though
right? I think that is okay...
08:45 <cycholka> It's still a shame
08:46 <cycholka> we've got a full undamaged dump from the end of may
08:46 <cycholka> so it's not terrible, but still some work got lost
08:46 * Sirp_ nods
08:46 <Sirp_> still, the sooner we get back up the sooner we can continue
working. :)
08:47 <Sirp_> so if going back in time lets us get back up more quickly and
easily.....
08:47 <cycholka> ATM roughly 2000 posts, 250 topics, 1500 PMs, 500 user accounts
and all attachment bindings are beyond recovery
08:47 <cycholka> that's why there's no option but to fall back

So we are back to a two month old database backup for the forum. That is
everything that happened in the forums in the course of the last two months is
lost. The wiki though should be fine and we hope that nothing there is lost.

| Additionally, I'm not sure that wesnothd has any remaining memory
| leaks, at least serious ones. This could also be explained simply by
| high legitimate memory use, especially since the server only has 1GB
| of RAM. I think the best answer, which we've known for a while, is to
| get a server that has more RAM (2-3GB).

And on this server we are now. So lets see how it behaves. Beside this we do
create daily backups of the website and databases on a separate HD. I will
probably setup a cronjob on my machine at home to download a backup of the
database once a week or something like that. This is not 100% sure so far.

Regarding the setup of the new server, here are some system specs:

Hosted at olm.net
OS: Debian 4.0
CPU: Core2Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz
RAM: 3GB + 2GB swap
Main HD: 250GB
Backup HD: 160GB
Network interface: 100MBit
Bandwidth Limit: 2500GB/month

At the moment all of the website (including forum and wiki) is on this machine.
Beside this the main multiplayer server is hosted there. When the machine has
shown to be stable and able to handle the load, we will also move
campaigns.wesnoth.org there. Beside this, once we have the results of the SoC
project by radx, we will be hosting stats.wesnoth.org on this machine.

Currently we do also plan to extend what we officially offer at wesnoth.org.
That is Dave currently plans to start blogs.wesnoth.org which will be located on
this machine, too. And we hope to get the graphics archive Jetryl is working on
over to this machine. Eventually we should also have a way to have "registered"
accounts for the multiplayer server that will just use the accounts that are
also used for the forums. Some code for this was already committed to svn but I
don't know the current status of this project. Dave already asked about mail
support so that each dev can get a [EMAIL PROTECTED] email address. This
should be possible soon, too.

If you have other (sane ;) ) ideas what we could/should offer, feel free to
post.

Cheers,
Nils Kneuper aka Ivanovic
