I did get my computer working again (new HD). Here's what happened with all those SDL-related bugs: 1. I upgraded to 1.2.14, tested things out, found that there were some graphics problems (Wesnoth code's fault), and the performance was atrocious (not sure why; but my own game had about 5x better performance). 2. Given the problems, I downgraded for the release. 3. My harddrive died, and bug reports started piling in. 4. I got a new harddrive, and everything back how it was, and I found: I'd downgraded to an ancient version of SDL.
So in the last release I used 1.2.13 again, and everything should be working. So our problems with 1.2.14 are not fixed, but for Mac at least, they're probably caused by how we do things. And all those "upstream" problems are based on an ancient version of SDL, and can therefore be ignored. Sorry about that!
