These are just my 2 cents (Since I only contibuted the FriBidi
support code and some of the Hebrew translation few years ago it
probably worth even less ;-)

I completely identify with you and Russel -- BUT!
 * I first heard about it from Rusty's mail 3 days ago.

 * Within this short time, the thread has already started
degenerating to "Let's take our stuff and go home" attitude.

From what I have read so far it seems that:
 * The original iPhone porters do provide their work as fully GPL'ed
source just like their other contributions to the project
and are not deviating from the GPL rules/spirit.

 * Apple app-store clearly violates the terms of the GPL (and I
won't even start talking about the GPL spirit).

 * As a result, the iPhone porters (and supporters) are now trapped
between a rock and a hard place (you may rightly claim that they
brought themselves to this place, but that's besides the point).

Rusty raised an important (and IMO correct) issue. My suggestion:
 * Let's all try and lower our voices a bit, even if some of us think
the iPhone porters made a grave mistake -- all of them deserve our
respect (not blind obedience) due to their long term dedication
   to this project.

 * Let's postpone (for a reasonable time) painfull steps like
withdrawing code. When people make wrong moves (we all do
sometimes), they need to be given a chance to *fix* them
   and not immediate ultimatums.

 * Last, but not least, the iPhone porters should (IMHO) (re-)consider how
they handle this not because some people would take their code away,
but because (as evidently seen) moves like this breaks the ties of
   the developer community.

So please, think about this again (maybe sleep over it for a few days)
and try to come up with a workable plan.

Thank you all,
