First of all I register my apology for not attending tommorrow's West Nile
Foundation meeting because of work engagement in the field upcountry. I will
miss the inaugaral meeting.
Coming to the book drive, I would say this was a wonderful thought from Jackson
which I certainly applaude. But I think the educational problem in our region
is
bigger than this. Around 2004, the government distributed text books to primary
schools through private stationary dealers in Westnile. I witnessed this with
KUDRASS enterprises Ltd as they delivered the books. This programme continued
for about three years. But every successive year you go back to deliver more
books, you find what ever was delivered the previous year packed intact and
dusty in the stores, others being destroyed by rats and termites.
I think the biggest problem as suggested by the previous writer is personal
attitude and lack of reading culture instilled in the childred by both parents
and teachers. However, my suggestion is that this exercise should go
concurrently with sensitization to instill reading culture.

I do share the same sentiments like you Christine, I wonder if the idea of Book
banks is the best way to go. From my own analysis the problem seems to be more
with the individual attitudes to education rather than the materials. Our
children do not have that personal commitment to education. Parents don't
impart that love for education into the children right from when they are
young. Parents need to encourage children and show that they value education,
and where a parent can read and write, looking at the childs work encourages
them. Many parents think education starts in school yet education of the child
starts with the mother and father from when the child is a baby. When you sing
or read to a baby you are instilling the value of knowledge.
My personal view is that we need to organise sensitization seminars for
parents,
children and teachers right at grassroot level. The right attitude needs to be
incalculated into the parents and children. However, I commend the idea of
the
books and hope it takes off.

the idea of book drive is very good and we all support. I am just thinking to
myself wether this is the best way to go about with the problem facing our
education sector in west nile. I think that there are lessons to learn fro the
drives that have been done by the old students associations. As Mvara old
student, we have learnt a lesson from the recent book drive that we had, sorry
I
have not been in close contact of recent and may not be the right person to
share the experience but the updates we have got are not so encouraging. So I
am
just wondering wether this will address the intended cause.
I think that for Mvara what has worked well is the annual event we had where
old
students shared their own experiences of studying in the same schools and
relating that to what they are now and the school exchange visits that really
motivated studnets to read, the books at one time were not given to students
for
the fear that they will get lost, then then next..................???
I think that we have certain basic things to do before we start other things.
Otherwise, these books will be collected and they will rot in a certain corner
or .......... People collected money to help famine victims, if am not
mistaken,
the money has never reached them, now we have another famine. People pledged to
help the 13 year old girl in Nebbi, am not sure where this ended. I think we
have lessons to learn from such events and therefore should ensure that we do
not repeat the same mistakes
My suggestion should be to identify key priorities and then start addressing
problems from the first priority, otherwise we shall be doing things to keep
ourselves relevant but not addressing the real issues on ground.
These are my personal thoughts and not tobe tken seriously, please continue
with
the drive the way it has been planned and intended.
