This probably won't make it to 1.7.  I tried integrating Tomasz's
patch, but it seems only _very_ loosely tested, with a number of
problems, many of which without obvious solutions.

I'll take a stab at either fixing it or writing a replacement when I
have more time.

The other points in my message still stand.
