 Defeating Spam in the Enterprise

by Ivy Wigmore, Consulting Editor

Spam. It clogs our inboxes, annoys us, and wastes our time and money. No one likes it, but there seems to be more of it every day. And the reason it seems that way is -- well, there is more of it every day. According to a Brightmail Network Probe, the percentage of Internet e-mail classified as spam has tripled in the past year and a half. Within the enterprise, it's estimated that the resources required to deal with spam will cost companies $30 billion this year. And yet, only about two-thirds of companies have implemented anti-spam measures.

This week, in our continuing Learn IT series, we take a look at the issues surrounding spam in the enterprise and give you some practical information about what you can do about it. We take you on a tour into the spammer's lair, discuss anti-spam legislation, and include links to more in-depth information. We've also provided a printable glossary chock full of interesting spam vocabulary and a quiz to test your spam IQ.

Will requiring spammers to clearly identify themselves and the product they're selling help unclog our inboxes? What about the provision for a national no-spam registry? Let us know what you think!

  Words-to-Go: Spam Vocabulary

Spam has its own colorful vocabulary. Sometimes, it doesn't even sound like English. Can you translate this statement?

"I was phishing the other day, using the spamhaus to send out Murkograms, when some teergrube nailed me and their admin put me on a blackhole list. I'm going to give them a Joe job."

Or how about this?

"Yeah, it looks like it's opt-in, but they must have harvested your address and stuck in a hash buster in to fool our filter. We could do a reverse DNS, but if they used an open relay, it won't do much good. "

We've put together a glossary to help you learn this underground language. For your convenience, we've also created a printable cheat sheet that we call "Words-to-Go." Pay attention, because this is definitely going to be on the quiz!
