The mbox file identifies the start of each message by the "From" (sometimes "From_") line beginning each one. Taken in conjunction with an empty line, which signifies the end of the previous message, the word "From" at the start of a line indicates to a program the beginning of a new message. Because a sender may include the combination of an empty line followed by a line starting with a capitalized "From" in the body of their message, an e-mail program searches the text of each message for this sequence and inserts > before the word "From" to indicate to the parser that, in this case, the word is simply part of the message. When this has happened, you may occasionally see ">From" starting a sentence in a message sent to you. _______________________ RELATED TERMS: file http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid1_gci212118,00.html?track=NL-34 parser http://searchwebservices.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid26_gci212749,00.html?track=NL-34 ______________________ SELECTED LINKS: SearchCIO offers a collection of Best Web Links related to e-mail. http://searchcio.techtarget.com/bestWebLinks/0,289521,sid19_tax282981,00.html?track=NL-34 The About Network has a helpful article about the mbox format. http://email.about.com/library/weekly/aa111300a.htm?terms=mbox PrairieNet.org includes information about mbox in their tutorial on e-mail basics. http://www.prairienet.org/membercenter/tutorial/tutorial/email/1.htm ______________________ TODAY'S TECH NEWS: SELLING SECURITY UP CORPORATE LADDER AN UPHILL BATTLE Surveys say more companies are spending more to secure their digital information, but those in the trenches say building a budget is still an uphill battle. http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci933459,00.html?track=NL-34 CONSULTANT FINDS CRM SAVINGS OVERSEAS Offshore outsourcing is cutting some CRM implementation fees by 30%, and -- in at least one case -- giving customers more functionality than they planned on. http://searchcrm.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid11_gci933166,00.html?track=NL-34 HIGHWAY PATROL GIVES LINUX A GREEN LIGHT The Missouri State Highway Patrol hums along on Red Hat Linux, as aging Windows NT systems are given a life sentence. http://searchenterpriselinux.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid39_gci933319,00.html?track=NL-34 >> Catch up on all the latest IT news at http://searchtechtarget.techtarget.com/?track=NL-34 ______________________ SECRET WORD-OF-THE-DAY | What is IT?
