Louanne:

We are successfully running WhatsUp Gold on Windows NT Workstation 4.0
running SP6a. WhatsUp talks directly to whatever COM port you select and
pretty much bypasses NT for COM port control. All I did was ensure that the
proper drivers were installed for the modem and that I could make a dial-up
connection to an ISP. Not exactly sure how it does it, but it works. We
try to use SMTP messages to our phones for most alerts, but if our internet
router or SMTP relay server dies for any reason, we have WhatsUp configured
to use the dial-out paging, and it's worked successfully (I'm sorry to say)
several times.

We have Nextel i1000 plus phones, and these phones provide voice (via
two-way radio and regular cell phone service) and two-way text
communications. They also allow access to certain parts of the Internet as
an add-on service to our plan. We can send an e-mail to the phone (i.e.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for one-way messages or
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for 2-way capability - you can actually
write and send an e-mail from the phone's keypad). We can also send a text
message via traditional pager dial-up service. WhatsUp has the capability
to do all of these types of notifications. I'm not exactly sure what other
phones are on the market that provide this type of capability, but you can
be pretty sure you'll need to be in a digital rather than analog cellular
network to receive these services. If I'm not mistaken, one or two of the
Motorola StarTac phones allow for text messaging, and I think the Sprint PCS
phones allow for this as well, but you'll need to check with your local cell
service providers to see exactly what is offered. The other option would be
to carry two-way (or even one-way) alphanumeric pagers, like SkyTel or
something.

Hope this helps.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] Solutions with a cell phone

Does anyone have a solution for both running on NT and using a Cell Phone
for notification. Is it possible to use text messaging or something like
that since the unimodem driver doesn't work under NT. I want to have
notification by phone but don't want to run Whatsup on a w98 machine. Are
there combo cell phones/pagers? Does anyone have any ideas?
