Tim:

The bulk of this reply assumes that you have at least one of your Exchange
servers running IMS (Internet Mail Service, formerly known as the Internet
Mail Connector). If you're sending/receiving e-mail to/from the Internet,
you've got to have SMTP services running somewhere.

We ran into a similar problem trying to send e-mail alerts from WhatsUp to
our text pagers, and the reason we had the problem was because our Exchange
server is set up not to allow SMTP relay; it is an anti-spam tactic. The
reason it wouldn't work was this: WhatsUp was trying to send a message to,
say, [EMAIL PROTECTED], and use our Exchange server as the SMTP
relay server. Our server would reject the message because page.nextel.com
was not a valid domain on the server itself. In other words, if it isn't a
valid address in our global address list, the server will return an
undeliverable, unable to relay message. Because of this problem (and a
couple of other, non-related special-case needs), we deployed an internal
SMTP relay server (runs on the same box as our FTP services) to handle the
relay needs. This box is for internal use only, and the SMTP service is not
visible on the Internet (therefore, it can't be used from there to relay).
Since having SMTP mail servers (and I'm betting the policy states that there
can't be any SMTP relay servers - but that's just a guess) is against
company policy, another option would be to configure IMS to relay to your
intended destination domain (i.e. page.nextel.com) and only allow it from
the IP address of your WhatsUp box, but this could get sort of hairy (and a
little scary, too, I might add). Consult with your Exchange administrators
on what options you might have.

On the other hand, if all you are trying to do is send alerts to valid
recipients with mailboxes on your server, that shouldn't be a problem
(again, assuming that one of your servers has IMS installed and configured).
When configuring the notification in WhatsUp, simply input the IP address of
your Exchange server and enter a valid SMTP address for a recipient on the
server. It should deliver the mail with no problems at all. We have alerts
set up to go to our Exchange mailboxes, SMTP mail to our Nextel phones, and
dial-up as a backup in case the SMTP relay server itself dies or if our
Internet router dies.

Hope this helps. If you have any further questions, please feel free to
contact me either here or offline.

Greg Stenberg
