We're running WUG on a dual-CPU 600Mhz Dell server. We do occasionally have
failed service polls, but they are always at a time when the polled server
is busy doing something else. For example, when our mail servers do a
directory synchronization, they will ignore the service polls. What's Up
Gold will miss one or two polls to one or more services on the box, although
the service(s) are up on the other end. What's failing in this case is NOT
WUG, but the server being polled. The server is too busy to reply to the
query.
You can verify this by running the debug log, and when the false reading
occurs, see if there's any response from the polled server. I'll bet there
is not. If I'm correct, then you'll prove that it's not the application,
it's the server being polled.
An even better, more foolproof method is to put an analyzer such as Sniffer
Pro between WUG and the remote server.

I think that there may just be something wrong with this application.
Why
would it be reporting so many false down signals to so many people, myself
included.

I have had the same problems in version 4, 5 and 6. My problem is that out
of my 80+ servers here locally I cannot run WUG on a dual or quad processor
server. I can only get it to run on a single processor server.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] up services reported as down
Hello Forum,
One of my friends emailed me the following question:
...there are times when whatsup reports services and/or devices down when
they are actually not...i've talked to ipswitch
support and they give me the same answer...either i'm polling too many
things at one time or they tell me to change the polling
frequency....neither has eliminated the problem...
I don't have the problem reported above. Anyone have any comments or
suggestions?
Thanks,
Michael Patterson
