I believe this is the sendee. But might also be a deny relay, error.
Check the relay specifications for the SMTP service. If this is an
exchange box, it will be the Internet Mail connector. If it is a 2000
box with just IIS check the IIS smtp relay specifications. Both
services can be configured to require a succesful authentication with an
NT user name password combo for relay.
If you can allow open relays for just a few moments, you might want to
just open up all relays and see if the problem is resolved. This would
allow you to know if it is really a relay problem or something els. MS
has at least three ways to authenticate to SMTP for relay, SSL, NT, and
SMTP. If you aren't in control of the mail server check with the mail
admin and ask what it takes to allow relay on the box.

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] SMTP Error on test
The following message is what comes up when I try to test the SMTP
Alert. I got it from the Debug Log.
sending msg via 172.18.20.1 to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
220 MAXILPRIME.maxil.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version:
5.0.2195.2096 ready at Thu, 23 Aug 2001 15:39:54 -0400 HELO wug. 501
5.5.4 Invalid Address
When it says "Invalid Address", is it talking about the IP address or
the email address, and if the email address, the sendee or the sender?
By the way, this machines IP is 172.18.20.9 and the email addresses it
is sending to and from are valid. I have also tested the SMTP port by
doing a telnet to port 25 and it connects successfully.
Any help would stop the flat spot on my forehead from getting worse
against this wall.
