Duude. You the Man.

I didn't have a primary DNS Suffix set on the WUG server but I did have
one for the DNS entry.

As soon as I set a Primary DNS Suffix, bango, bingo, it succeeds.

Thanks.

Looks like a DNS related complaint. Some mailers are more intelligent
than
others, and expect your DNS to be set up right. Typically, it will
perform
the following two checks:

1. Take the IP address of the system on the other side of the socket,
and
do a DNS lookup on the IP address to get the hostname (known as a
reverse
lookup). For example, your mail server would look for
9.20.18.172.in-addr.arpa. (this is the format that reverse lookups are
done
in.. yeah it's confusing). It would expect to get back a 'PTR' DNS
record
that has the remote host's FQDN.

2. Now that it has your hostname (according to DNS), it will compare it
to
what you send in the SMTP HELO string. The format of the HELO is 'HELO
<originating_hostname>\r\n' Kind-of a way of saying, "Hi. I'm Duane.
Nice
to meet you." Now if the mailer is especially paranoid, it will take
the
hostname that came back from DNS (which should be the same as the HELO)
and
do a DNS lookup AGAIN (on the hostname this time) to get the IP Address
for
that name. The IP Address it gets back *should* be the same as what's
currently connected to the socket.

These checks are typically performed to make it harder for spammers to
impersonate being part of 'your domain' and therefore being granted free
relaying priviledges.

I'd make sure of the following things.
     * Make sure the NT Hostname and the DNS hostname/domain name
information on the what's up server are correct.
     * Make sure that your DNS is set up to where you can successfully
do a
DNS lookup on an IP Address, get the hostname
     * Make sure that your DNS is set up to where you can successfully
do a
DNS lookup on that hostname, and get the same IP.

If it's still not coming together for you, I'd recommend two books.
_DNS
and BIND_ and _Sendmail_ both published by O'Reilly. Looks like you're
using exchange, so I'm not sure how much the sendmail book would help.
But
both books have a good discussion of how DNS and SMTP are (sometimes
strangely) intertwined.

If nothing else, you can use the books to act as a cushion between your
head and the wall. Hope this helps.

Michael, If I had to go out on a limb here I would guess that it doesn't
like the email address since the SMTP server seems to be working. In the
notification, try a known good email address in the "to" and "from"
fields.
Most of the time I see that the SMTP server won't forward a message
unless
the from address is one that the SMTP server likes. The default WUG
sends
may not ne what it likes.
Also, Try fastening a pillow or a bag of tomatoes to your forehead to
avoid
that flat spot.

Cheers,
Mike

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] SMTP Error on test

The following message is what comes up when I try to test the SMTP
Alert. I got it from the Debug Log.

sending msg via 172.18.20.1 to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
220 MAXILPRIME.maxil.com Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version:
5.0.2195.2096 ready at Thu, 23 Aug 2001 15:39:54 -0400
HELO wug.
501 5.5.4 Invalid Address

When it says "Invalid Address", is it talking about the IP address or
the email address, and if the email address, the sendee or the sender?

By the way, this machines IP is 172.18.20.9 and the email addresses it
is sending to and from are valid. I have also tested the SMTP port by
doing a telnet to port 25 and it connects successfully.

Any help would stop the flat spot on my forehead from getting worse
against this wall.
