I had the same problem this week. I believe I even posted the problem out.
Anyways this is what I found and how I made work.

1) First the router needs to have a community name defined in its
configuration.
2) The 2 items you are going to need are ifInOctets for inbound packets, and
ifOutOctets for outbound packets. I actually used the numbers but that
should not matter. (1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.16 Instance 2 for outbound,
1.3.6.1.2.1.2.2.1.10 Instance 2 for inbound) The Instance is the Interface
from where you are gathering data. 2 is the serial interface, which you use
to communicate to the outside.
3) Uset Net Tools SNMP to verify if you are capturing any information from
the router.
