Will they be connected all the time? If not, then how will you tell
whether the line is down or they have just disconnected? If they are connected
all the time (cable modem or ???), my experience is that the IP address rarely
changes, if at all.
One option you might consider is dynamic DNS. Essentially, something is
loaded on the remote systems that reports the IP address to a central location,
which then makes it available via normal DNS resolution. You could then use WUG
with DNS names instead of IP addresses. There are many people that offer dynamic
DNS service, from free on up. Google for dynamic DNS and you'll find a
bunch.
