If you do not like the EMF files produced by Visio then WhatsUp Gold's VDevice tool is able to create your EMF icons from scratch. I attach a laptop DSE and EMF created by a colleague when he was fiddling about. It's the device type definition in hosttype.ini that lets things get interesting. This definition references the EMF file but also specifies what services are associated with the type, etc. One way to visually differentiate different device types is not to create a unique EMF for each and every one - it's to use Overlay Text (Configure -> Device Types -> Edit -> Overlay Text). Not only is this quick and easy to do... it saves on memory because only one EMF has to be loaded.
