I agree, the template map set to 'quiet' is the way to go. Users just
complete the gaps eg ip address, device name etc.

Okay, so why not set up a template map that you do not regularly view,
keeping device monitor off. Then when you need a template you can copy that
one device and rename it to the new device.
I do something similar to that...copy and paste...then I rename, change IP,
and that is it.

Yep, I do the same thing as you, with the group setup. What I would to do
is add this to a device type template, so that everytime you drag over a
new server (or new router, or new "something box"), that it will have all
those groups pre-defined with the pre-defined alert triggers (i.e. I log
on 1 missed poll, email on 2 missed polls and page on 4 missed polls), this
way no one can add a device without having an alert defined, and it would
also cut back on mis-types for all this info, not to mention it'll just
save me time :-)
Thanks,
Bruce

I do this already. This is what I do.
I set up all users that will be receiving notifications via SMTP, etc.
Then I have created groups called server, router, Telecom.
Then I set up the users in those groups from the group setup.
Once this is complete I assign alerts to each device depending on the
group.
Hope this helps. If not e-mail me back.

I don't think I can do this in WUG, but if I can please let me know, if not
I suggest making it a feature for newer releases.
I would like to create a new device type, and in that device type
"template" I would like to define all the things that are under the
properties tab. The biggest being the alerts info... by defining this
information under a new device template, this would help me standardize on
alerts to specific support groups depending on device type... i.e. device
type=router, alert-router group...... device type=server, alert=server
group.... this way I can easily add new devices based on templates and not
have to worry about separately defining the multiple alerts....
If I can do this already let me know...
