Thanks again for another response, Jim. But there is no problem with my
pagers, modem, or paging configuration in WUG. I just sent out test pages
from within the WUG Notification Library. Both pagers successfully got the
test pages. That means the pager notification config in WUG is correst,
the TAP dial-in number to Arch Wireless is correct, and the pagers
themselves are functioning correctly. I can't imagine what the problem is.
Regardless of what the SNMP settings are for one of our Notes servers, the
notification is configured properly in WUG, so why is the pager alert
failing. I think it's just something like a renegade rat that is causing
havoc somewhere in the memory or disk space beingused by WUG. I'm going to
try removing the particular Notes server device from WUG, make a new map,
create the Notes server device in the new map, and create a whole new pager
notification entry for just this device and test from there.

Randy you are right on here. Nothing like picking up the telephone and
calling the number to make sure. Also.....
1).Get a list of commands from the modem vendor that shows the
initialization strings required to turn off compression and error
correction.
2). Open the debug log so you can see it while doing next step.
3). open notifications library -> edit pager -> pager com port setting ->
initialization string: I would start with ATE0. (this turns off echo).
4). See what error you are getting back when you test the pager. (WUG
really HATES it when echo is not off).
5). Adjust the init string until you get success on the test page.
REMEMBER....machines cannot win!! :-)

I noticed that you haven't mentioned some critical troubleshooting
steps.
FWIW, my troubleshooting regimen would include the following:
1. Call the pager from a regular phone, to ensure it can receive pages
from another source.
2. Test the paging function of WUG while sitting next to the modem, with
the modem speaker turned on. Make sure to try different bit-parity-stop
combinations, like 7-Even-1. Listen to ensure that the modem connects.
If it doesn't connect, suspect a wrong phone number, or the TAP service
is at fault.
3. If modem connects but still fails, connect to the TAP service
(assuming it's TAP) using your favorite terminal emulator, and enter the
protocol by hand (you'll likely have to Google on "TAP protocol" to find
the exact steps).
4. If the manual method works, recheck settings, then blame WUG. :)

Subject: [WhatsUp Forum] repeating failed WUG alerts to a pager
Hi, people. Sorry this is a bit lengthy.
I've got a real asskicker of a problem here. I don't think it has
anything
to do with my WUG installation itself, but then again, I am really
puzzled
at this point.
First off, I've got a W2K server, WUG 7.03 was installed when the
problem
began surfacing about 10 days ago. I just upgraded to 8.0 this past
Monday.
Got many Lotus Notes servers being monitored. Compaq Insight Mgr also
monitoring these servers and set up to deliver SNMP traps to my WUG
server.
The SNMP traps generate a PAGE to the Lotus Notes team pager. Note all
of
the failed attempts that came from the CITLNADMINHUB server in the log
below. Already confirmed 100% that there's nothing wrong with the pager
alerting config in WUG. SNMP traps from other Notes servers generate
successful notifications to the pager. The ADMINHUB server's SNMP
service
is configured properly; looked at that 100 times. "send authentication
traps" is disabled, and the community names are right. On the ADMINHUB
device in WUG, it was originally set to accept ANY traps. We believe we
tracked the problem of authentication failure traps to a Notes server
over
in our London office. But the problem here in WUG is the repeated
failed
attempts to send a page to the Notes pager. It's going over and over
and
over for the past few days. I've had my pager company reset the pager
in
order to flush out any queued pages that may be flooding it. I've even
taken the Notes pager out of the ADMINHUB alerts configuration. The WUG
server and external modem have been power cycled a few times, as well.
My
question, I guess, will WUG re-attempt a failed notification x number
of
times before it drops the attempt altogether? I don't know where the
problem is. Anybody???????? Thanks......
